Springer Nature SciGraph Analytics: building business tools for the scholarly publishing domain using LOD and the ELK stack

Industry

Springer Nature SciGraph is a scholarly linked data repository hosting more than one billion triples about publications, grants, conferences, organizations and many other objects that are linked to the publishing activities of Springer Nature. Alongside making this data available online under a diverse licensing scheme (CC0, CC-BY and CC-BY-NC) in order to increase its reuse within the scientific community, this work was aimed at providing Springer Nature with more opportunities to develop compelling user facing products based on these metadata. Developing advanced business intelligence dashboards which take advantage of the fact that such a diverse and vast range of data has been gathered within a platform based on an integrated domain model. The SN SciGraph Analytics tool is the main product deriving from this work. It is used by internal staff at Springer Nature - mainly from the editorial, sales and marketing departments - in order to gather insights into the research landscape and in particular about the performance of Springer Nature journals. In this presentation we will describe the technical architecture of this application, the use cases it supports, the challenges we had to face in building it and the outstanding ones which we will tackle in future work.
